By focusing on the biomedical domain, we introduced concrete forms of extra-linguistic knowledge (i.e., domain ontologies built by the target domain communities) and diverse databases, which include manually curated pathway networks. The task of linking information in text with these resources helped to define concrete research topics focusing on the relation between language and knowledge of the target domains. The transformer model is trained to predict masked words in the former strategy. In the latter strategy, the model must predict whether two sentences follow each other. Unsolved Problems in Natural Language Understanding Datasets

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review that analyzes proposals that adapt the transformers technology for longitudinal health data. Other reviews focused on general aspects of transformers (Lin et al. 2022), time series (Wen et al. 2022) and computational vision (Khan et al. 2022; Liu et al. 2021b). These and other recent research efforts have in common the use of machine learning techniques. The main example is the family of deep learning recurrent neural networks (RNNs), specially designed to provide a tractable solution to handle longitudinal data (Mao and Sejdić 2022). RNNs support tasks such as sequence classification, anomaly detection, decision-making, and status prediction.

Therefore, several talks at the event focus on testing and understanding how NLP models perform on Responsible AI questions. Other than that, the core of the summit is looking at real world case studies. There’s several really good academic NLP conferences but not so many applied ones. Until recently, the conventional wisdom was that while AI was better than humans at data-driven decision making tasks, it was still inferior to humans for cognitive and creative ones. But in the past two years language-based AI has advanced by leaps and bounds, changing common notions of what this technology can do. In this paper, we provide a short overview of NLP, then we dive into the different challenges that are facing it, finally, we conclude by presenting recent trends and future research directions that are speculated by the research community.

2 State-of-the-art models in NLP

Bidirectional RNNs can analyze longitudinal data in both directions, and they were used, for example, to detect medical events (e.g., adverse drug events) in EHR (Jagannatha and Yu 2016). This type of RNNs offers advantages in the health domain due to their ability to capture data from past and future time intervals. While unidirectional RNNs only consider data points from the past to detect an eventual problem, bidirectional RNNs consider both past and future heart rate measurements for each data point in an HR sequence. Thus, this approach allows a better understanding of the temporal context and dynamics of the patient’s heart rate.
